Hashtag Counter

Paste a caption or a hashtag list. You get the total, the unique count, duplicates, tags that will not work (numbers-only, over 100 characters) and a cleaned list to copy. The bars show the count against each platform's cap, with the sweet spot each one actually rewards.

Instagram rejects a post that has more than 30 hashtags across the caption and first comment. YouTube ignores every hashtag once you pass 15. Duplicates are collapsed by all platforms, so the unique count is the one that matters.

Hashtag limits by platform (2026)

  • Instagram: 30 per post including the first comment; Instagram has been testing a five-tag cap since 2025 and says 3–5 is the target.
  • TikTok: no hard cap beyond the 4,000-character caption; 3–5 works.
  • YouTube: more than 15 and all are ignored; the first three show above the title.
  • LinkedIn: no cap; 3–5 recommended.
  • X: no cap; posts with more than two get less reach.
  • Threads: one topic tag per post.
  • Pinterest: 20; 2–5 works.

Hashtags that do not work

Numbers-only tags like #2026 are not clickable on Instagram. Tags with punctuation break at the punctuation. Duplicates are collapsed by every platform, so repeating a tag adds nothing. Instagram also blocks a rolling list of banned tags; if a post gets no reach, check the tags one at a time on Instagram search.

Frequently asked questions

How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?

Three to five specific ones. Instagram itself said in 2025 that hashtags categorise content rather than boost it, and it has been testing a five-tag limit.

Do hashtags in the first comment count?

Yes. Instagram treats them the same as caption tags, including toward the 30-tag limit.

Does the counter store my captions?

No. Everything runs in your browser.
