YouTube Thumbnail Size 2026: Shorts Dimensions Too
YouTube thumbnail size in 2026: 1280 x 720 for long-form, 9:16 Shorts thumbs, 1080 x 1920 Shorts videos, plus safe zones, file limits, and Help caps.
I export YouTube thumbnails at 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9) in 2026. That’s the size YouTube Help has recommended for years (minimum width 640), and it’s still what Snappa prints. Help also recommends 3840 x 2160 for long-form and 2160 x 3840 for Shorts when you can stay under the file cap. Desktop uploads can go to 50 MB. Mobile video thumbs stay at 2 MB. Shorts videos are 1080 x 1920 (9:16), up to 3 minutes. Shorts custom thumbs should be 9:16 too, not a cropped 1280 x 720. r/NewTubers still argues whether 1280 x 720 is “actually recommended.” It is. Help says so. I keep a 16:9 template and a 9:16 template in the same Figma file so I don’t crop the wrong one at upload time.
TL;DR
- Long-form thumb: 1280 x 720, under 2 MB on mobile
- Shorts video: 1080 x 1920, max 3 minutes
- Shorts thumb: 9:16 (I design 1080 x 1920)
- Keep type out of the edges. TV and Shorts UI both eat them.
What YouTube thumbnail size should I use in 2026?
1280 x 720 pixels, 16:9. I still deliver that for every long-form video. Snappa still prints 1280 x 720. YouTube Help also mentions larger 16:9 uploads, including 3840 x 2160. I only go bigger if a client insists on a 4k still and the file stays under the cap. YouTube shows thumbs small in search, smaller on mobile, and large on TV. 1280 x 720 covers all three if the type is thick.
| Asset | Pixels | Ratio | Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-form thumb | 1280 x 720 | 16:9 | 2 MB mobile / 50 MB desktop |
| Large 16:9 thumb (optional) | 3840 x 2160 | 16:9 | same caps |
| Shorts video | 1080 x 1920 | 9:16 | 3 minutes |
| Shorts thumb I design | 1080 x 1920 | 9:16 | 2 MB mobile |
| Help’s large Shorts thumb | 2160 x 3840 | 9:16 | 2 MB mobile |
| Podcast playlist thumb | 1:1 | square | 10 MB on mobile |
Minimum width for a video thumb is 640 pixels. I’ve never shipped 640 on purpose. Canva’s YouTube size wiki still shows older banner numbers. I use Help, not a 2022 Canva leftover.
Should I export JPG or PNG for a face-heavy thumb?
JPG for photos of faces. PNG for flat graphics with big type. A PNG of a face is a large file that still gets compressed. I stay under 2 MB either way.
What size should a YouTube Shorts thumbnail be?
9:16. I design 1080 x 1920. Help lists 2160 x 3840 with a minimum height of 640 for Shorts thumbs. Custom Shorts thumbs are currently only available in YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account must be verified. The feed is vertical. A 16:9 thumb gets cropped into a tall hole.
I put the face and the three-word title in the center. The Shorts player stacks buttons on the right and title/handle toward the bottom.
What are the dimensions for a YouTube Short itself?
1080 x 1920, 9:16, up to 3 minutes. That’s the video spec I export. 720 x 1280 will post and looks softer. Horizontal videos can be posted, and YouTube may still classify them as Shorts if they are under the time cap, but they look wrong in the Shorts player. I crop.
Help has a nasty catch for vertical videos that still use a 16:9 custom thumb: YouTube may replace that thumb with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on home, explore, and subscriptions. Your 16:9 custom still shows on the watch feed. That’s why I don’t reuse a long-form thumb on a Short.
Is a 60 second Short different from a 3 minute Short?
Same pixels. Different patience. I cut most Shorts under 60 seconds. I use the 3-minute room for a recipe or a real tutorial. YouTube still wants 9:16 either way.
If you already have a TikTok at 1080 x 1920, the pixel box matches. Safe zones don’t. See TikTok video size.
Can I use a 1280 x 720 thumbnail for Shorts?
You can upload it. YouTube will crop the sides. If your title lived on the left, it’s gone. I make a separate 9:16 thumb. That’s 10 extra minutes in Figma and it stops me from guessing.
Should I use 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 for YouTube thumbnails?
1280 x 720 is still the size I deliver, and it’s the size the r/NewTubers thread still argues about. 1920 x 1080 is the same 16:9 ratio at 1080p. It will upload. Help’s “as large as possible” line is 3840 x 2160, not 1920 x 1080.
I don’t upscale a 1280 x 720 design to 1920 x 1080 for a sharpness flex. I design at 1280 x 720 (or a 2x 2560 x 1440 working file) and I export 1280 x 720 under the mobile 2 MB cap. If I’m on desktop Studio, Help allows 50 MB, so a 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160 PNG can pass. Search tiles still display small. Thick type matters more than extra pixels.
A 1920 x 1080 thumb is not a Shorts thumb. Shorts want 9:16.
What if the account won’t take a custom Shorts thumb?
Some accounts still pick a frame from the video. Help requires a verified account for custom thumbs. I then design the first frame of the Short like a thumb: big type, center, no tiny disclaimers.
What’s the YouTube thumbnail safe zone?
For 1280 x 720 I keep type inside the center ~1000 x 560. YouTube timestamps, duration, and watch-later sit on the corners. On TV the overscan and UI can eat more. I don’t put a word in the last 40 pixels of any edge.
For Shorts thumbs I keep type out of the bottom ~250 pixels and the right ~120 pixels. Same habit as Reels, different app.
How big can a YouTube thumbnail file be?
Under 2 MB on mobile. Up to 50 MB on desktop. YouTube Help splits the cap by device: mobile is 2 MB for video thumbnails (10 MB for podcasts). Desktop is 50 MB for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbs. JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP. Snappa still prints the 2 MB video / 10 MB podcast line, which matches mobile. I export sRGB JPG, quality 80 to 90, 1280 x 720. If a PNG of a flat graphic is 400 KB, I leave it as PNG. If a photo PNG is 5 MB, I convert unless I’m on desktop and I need the extra headroom.
YouTube will reject oversize files. It won’t email you a nice reason at 11pm. I check the file size before I open Studio. Help also has a daily custom thumbnail limit. If you hit “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” wait 24 hours. Community Guidelines strikes can turn custom thumbs off.
What if Studio rejects the thumbnail?
I reopen the export, drop quality to 70, or switch PNG to JPG. I don’t resize below 1280 x 720 to chase the 2 MB cap. A 900 x 506 thumb looks soft on TV.
What size should my YouTube channel art be?
Channel art is 2560 x 1440. The safe zone for the text that shows on every device is about 1546 x 423 in the center. Creatorflow lists max 6 MB for that banner. That’s a cousin of the Facebook cover problem, not a thumbnail. I don’t reuse 1280 x 720 as channel art. It will upscale and look soft.
| Channel | Pixels | Safe area |
|---|---|---|
| Cover art | 2560 x 1440 | ~1546 x 423 center |
| Profile icon | 800 x 800 (I upload 1080) | Circle crop |
Does mobile show the same channel art as TV?
No. TV and desktop show more of the 2560 x 1440 canvas. Mobile shows a shorter center strip. That’s why the 1546 x 423 safe zone exists. I put the channel name in that strip and I let the sides be extra photo.
Do Shorts and long-form videos share the same thumbnail crop?
No. Long-form is 16:9 in search, suggested, and subscriptions. Shorts are 9:16 in the Shorts shelf and 9:16 in the player. A channel that does both needs two templates. I keep them in one Figma page so the fonts match and the ratios don’t.
What size should I design if I also post the clip to TikTok?
The video can be one 1080 x 1920 file. The YouTube long-form thumb can’t. If the same clip is also a 10-minute watch, I cut a 16:9 YouTube version and a 1280 x 720 thumb. TikTok doesn’t use 1280 x 720. Instagram Reels want the same 9:16 box, with a different cover crop on Instagram image sizes.
Why does my thumbnail look blurry on TV?
TV is huge and far away. A 720p thumb with 12 px type looks like noise from the couch. I use fewer words, thicker type, and higher contrast. I don’t add a fourth drop shadow to “fix” blur. If the source image is 640 px wide, no export setting saves it.
Should I put text on a Shorts thumbnail?
A little. Three words, maybe a number. The Shorts UI already shows your title. Duplicate titles look busy. On long-form thumbs I do use text because the search tile is silent. Different surfaces, different type.
I also skip tiny testimonials on thumbs. They die at 120 pixels wide on a phone.
How do I export a thumbnail that YouTube won’t reject?
1280 x 720, sRGB, JPG or PNG, under 2 MB, no banned imagery. Help wants thumbs to follow Community Guidelines (no nudity, hate, violence). I keep a 2x working file (2560 x 1440) in Figma and I export 1280 x 720 for upload. I don’t upload the 2x if it blows the 2 MB cap.
For Shorts I export 1080 x 1920 JPG. If Help on your account asks for a taller 9:16, I can export 2160 x 3840 as long as it stays under 2 MB. Photos at that size often don’t. Graphics sometimes do.
Do I need a .jpg extension?
Yes, a real image file. YouTube wants JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP. I don’t upload a .webp from a screenshot tool and hope. I also don’t upload a 9:16 Shorts thumb into the long-form slot.
The rest of the platforms sit on the social media image size hub. Facebook’s wide cover isn’t a YouTube thumb. That crop is on Facebook cover photo size.
Frequently asked questions
What YouTube thumbnail size should I use in 2026?
Export 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9) for long-form videos, JPG or PNG, under 2 MB on mobile. YouTube Help also recommends 3840 x 2160 when you can stay under the file cap. 1280 x 720 is still the size I deliver.
What size should a YouTube Shorts thumbnail be?
YouTube Help asks for a 9:16 Shorts thumbnail (it lists 2160 x 3840 as a large target, minimum height 640). I design 1080 x 1920 and keep the subject in the center because the Shorts UI covers the edges.
What are the dimensions for a YouTube Short?
1080 x 1920 pixels, 9:16, up to 3 minutes. That is the video, not the long-form 1280 x 720 thumb.
Can I use a 1280 x 720 thumbnail for Shorts?
You can upload it, and YouTube will crop. I do not. A 16:9 thumb in a 9:16 hole loses the sides, which is usually where the text was.
How big can a YouTube thumbnail file be?
Mobile video thumbs are under 2 MB. Desktop Studio allows up to 50 MB. JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP. I still export sRGB JPG around 1280 x 720 so a phone upload does not bounce.
Should I use 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 for YouTube thumbnails?
1280 x 720 is the size I deliver. 1920 x 1080 is the same 16:9 ratio and will upload. YouTube Help's large target is 3840 x 2160, not 1920 x 1080. Shorts thumbs should be 9:16, not either of those.
