Every X limit
Characters are counted the way people see them: an emoji or an accented letter is one character, the same way X (Twitter) counts. X uses a weighted count: links are always 23, and emoji or CJK characters count as 2.
X character limits in 2026
X does not simply count characters. Every link counts as 23 regardless of length, most Latin letters and punctuation count as 1, and emoji, CJK characters and styled Unicode letters count as 2. This counter uses that weighting, which is why it can disagree with a plain character count.
How X counts characters
X uses a weighted count, not a plain one. Any link becomes a t.co link and counts as 23 characters. Letters, numbers and common punctuation count as 1. Emoji, CJK characters and Unicode styled letters count as 2. That is why a 280-character post with three emoji is over the limit: this counter applies the same rules.
Writing to the X limit
- X rewards a strong first line and a post that stands alone without context. Threads work for longer ideas; a single post with a link performs worse than one without.
- Use "Trim to limit" to cut at the boundary, then rewrite the ending rather than leaving a cut-off sentence.
- Hashtags and mentions count in full.
