Later isn’t really a scheduler company anymore

Later spent years as the default Instagram scheduler. Visual calendar, grid preview, Link in Bio, a free plan to get started. If you came here searching for a Later alternative, you’ve probably noticed that isn’t the company Later is anymore.

Open Later’s homepage today and the first thing it sells you is influencer campaigns, not scheduling. After Mavrck acquired Later in 2022 and the two merged under the Later brand, Later became three products: Later Social for publishing, Later Influence for running influencer campaigns, and Mavely for affiliate marketing. Scheduling, the thing most people came for, is now one third of the pitch, and it shows.

A disclosure before we go on: I build a competing tool (Social by InstantDM), so weigh my own pick accordingly. Everything else here is honest, including where Later still wins.

What actually changed (and why people are leaving)

It cut the free plan and raised prices

For years, Later’s free plan was how most people started. In 2024 that went away, which removed Later’s main on-ramp and, by several accounts, pushed casual users toward Buffer and Metricool. At the same time the Starter plan climbed from $18 to $25 a month. Today the ladder looks like this:

  • Starter: $25/month ($18 annual), 1 social set
  • Growth: $50/month ($45 annual), 2 social sets
  • Scale: $110/month ($82.50 annual), 6 social sets

No free plan, just a trial.

The “social set” model gets expensive fast

A social set is one profile per platform. Instagram, Facebook and TikTok for a single brand counts as one set, which sounds reasonable. The problem shows up the moment you run more than one account on the same network, because a second Instagram is a second set. Manage a few brands, or a client roster, and you’re pushed up the tiers quickly, as SocialPilot’s breakdown notes. The Starter plan also caps you at 30 posts per profile a month and just 5 AI credits, enough to feel like a demo rather than a feature.

It dropped X/Twitter scheduling

This one still stings for a lot of users. In 2025 Later removed X/Twitter scheduling and analytics, and people who’d paid for annual plans that included X were, understandably, not happy about paying for a feature that vanished mid-term.

The billing reputation

Later’s ratings tell a split story. It sits around 4.5 on G2 but about 1.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot, and the Trustpilot reviews cluster around billing: surprise renewals, charges after cancellation, and a firm no-refund stance. If you switch, cancel deliberately and keep the confirmation.

None of this makes Later a bad product for the right person. It makes it a narrower, pricier, more enterprise-influencer product than the scheduler people fell for.

How I’d choose a Later alternative

Given what’s driving people out, I’d weigh a few things. Look for per-account pricing rather than per-social-set, so multiple accounts don’t multiply your bill. Check that it still supports the platforms you use, X included. Watch for caps on posts and AI credits on the entry plan. If Later’s visual planning is what you’ll miss, prioritise a tool that does grid preview and calendar well. And it helps to pick a company that still treats scheduling as the main event.

Here are the seven I’d point Later users to, roughly by how well they fit.

The 7 best Later alternatives in 2026

1. Social by InstantDM: per account, not per social set

My tool, so weigh it accordingly. The honest case for Later refugees is the pricing model. It charges per account, not per social set, so multiple accounts don’t stack up new charges. Pro is $19/month (about $120 a year annually) for up to 15 connected accounts, with unlimited team members. It publishes to 8 platforms, still including X, which Later dropped, plus native YouTube. It writes AI captions without a stingy monthly credit cap, and ships a public API and MCP server so an AI agent can schedule for you.

Where it isn’t the answer: it’s newer than Later, it doesn’t have a Link in Bio product, and it isn’t built around Instagram grid aesthetics the way Later is. If visual IG planning is your whole workflow, keep reading. If you want to publish across platforms without the social-set tax, this fits.

Best for multi-account and multi-platform creators who don’t want to pay per social set.

2. Buffer: it still has a real free plan

Buffer is the tool a lot of people landed on after Later removed free access, for the obvious reason that Buffer kept its free plan (3 channels). It’s clean, it schedules well across platforms, and paid plans start at $6/month per channel.

Per-channel pricing does add up past a few channels, and the analytics are light, but for simple publishing with a free tier to start, it’s the natural Later replacement.

Best for solo creators who want simple, and a free plan to begin with.

3. Metricool: cheap, and strong on analytics

Metricool is the other tool Later leavers keep landing on. It still has a free plan, starts around $18/month, and prices per brand rather than per social set. You also get genuinely good analytics and competitor tracking, which Later reserves for higher tiers.

Best for data-minded creators and small teams managing a few brands.

4. Planoly: the closest match for visual Instagram planning

If what you’ll actually miss is Later’s grid preview and visual aesthetic planning, Planoly is the most like-for-like option. It’s built around planning a beautiful Instagram feed visually, with a drag-and-drop grid, and it’s affordable.

It’s more Instagram and Pinterest focused than a full multi-platform suite, so it’s a swap for the visual workflow, not the everything workflow.

Best for visual creators whose main love for Later was the grid.

5. Publer: the budget workhorse

Publer does a lot for $12/month: bulk scheduling, recycling, automation, and unlimited team members. Smaller integration library than Later, but excellent value and none of the social-set maths.

Best for freelancers and startups who want a lot of tool for a little money.

6. SocialPilot: for client work

SocialPilot is built for the agency use case Later’s Scale plan targets, with bulk scheduling, client management and white-label reports from around $30/month, without per-set pricing stacking up.

Best for freelancers and agencies managing multiple clients.

7. Agorapulse: when engagement is the job

Agorapulse leads with a unified social inbox and a strong support reputation, from about $49/month. If replying to comments and DMs across networks is as important to you as publishing, it’s a better fit than Later ever was.

Best for teams whose main work is engagement, not just scheduling.

What the alternatives cost (12 months)

Later’s per-social-set model is easy to underestimate. Here’s a year on Later’s tiers against a few alternatives.

Later figures are annual-billing rates by social set. Social by InstantDM is per account/workspace with unlimited team members. Prices as of mid-2026; check each vendor for current numbers.

For a single brand on a handful of platforms, Later’s Starter plan is genuinely affordable. The bill only runs away once you add accounts, which is exactly where the per-account tools pull ahead.

When Later is still the right call

To be fair, Later still does some things better than most. If you’re a single-brand, Instagram-first creator who lives in the visual calendar and grid preview, and you use Link in Bio, Later remains one of the best tools for that specific job. And if you genuinely want to run influencer campaigns, Later Influence is a serious product, not an afterthought.

The people who should look elsewhere are the ones running multiple accounts, the ones who need X, and the ones who just wanted a straightforward scheduler and don’t want to pay to sit inside an influencer-marketing platform.

How to switch off Later

It’s an afternoon, not a migration project:

  1. Export your scheduled posts and note your connected accounts in Later.
  2. Connect those accounts to your new tool, a few minutes each, via the official APIs.
  3. Rebuild your calendar and posting times.
  4. If you used Link in Bio, set up a replacement like Linktree or Beacons.
  5. Run both in parallel for a week, then cancel Later deliberately and keep the confirmation, given its billing reputation.

If the social-set maths or the pivot away from scheduling is what brought you here, the fix is a per-account tool that still treats publishing as the point.
