Instagram counts characters the way you see them: an emoji is one, an accented letter is one. Captions stop at 2,200 characters, bios at 150, and the feed shows about 125 characters of a caption before the "more" link. Hashtags in the first comment count toward the 30-tag limit too.

The first line is a headline: it is the only part people see before "more". Line breaks make long captions readable, and a question near the end pulls comments, which Instagram weighs more than likes.
Instagram said in 2025 that hashtags exist to categorise content, not to boost reach, and it started testing a cap of five per post. Three to five specific tags in the caption do more than thirty broad ones, and tags in the first comment are treated the same as tags in the caption.

Formatting support on Instagram
Instagram has no bold or italic in captions or bios. Styled text only works as Unicode characters, and line breaks vanish unless a line has a character on it.
Use "•" or "—" as bullets; real list formatting is not supported.
